EXCLUSIVE: John Turturro is set to star in and direct Fading Gigolo, which French mini major MK2 is producing.

MK2 also has boarded Jonathan Demme’s animated adaptation of Dave Eggers’ Zeitoun.

In Fading Gigolo, a down-on-his luck old pimp persuades Turturro’s character to become a gigolo.

Principal photography on the $10 million picture starts in New York in April. The script, co-written by Turturro, is available in Berlin.

Zeitoun is Demme’s long-gestated adaptation of Eggers’ non-fiction work about an American citizen of Syrian origin who was wrongly arrested in New Orleans as a suspected terrorist in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Demme’s $15 million, 2D feature-length, animation adaptation is scheduled for delivery in 2014.

MK2, led by president Nathanael Karmitz, also continues sales on Walter Salles’ On the Road, Abbas Kiarostami’s Like Someone in Love, Olivier Assayas’ Something in the Air and Xavier Dolan’s Laurence Anyways.
