Ten official international Oscar submissions including Lee Chang-dong’s Venice Silver Lion grand jury prize winner Possible Love, Markus Schleinzer’s Rose starring Berlin Silver Bear best actress winner Sandra Hüller, and Sandra Wollner’s Cannes’ Un Certain Regard winner Everytime are among the lineup at the 40th AFI Fest running October 21-25 in Hollywood.
The roster includes Marine Atlan’s Cannes’ Critics’ Week grand prize winner La Gradiva, Manuela Martelli’s The Meltdown, İlker Çatak’s Berlin Golden Bear winner Yellow Letters, Andrew Haigh’s A Long Winter, Louis Clichy’s Iron Boy, Stephanie Ahn’s Sundance U.S. Dramatic debut feature special jury award winner Bedford Park, Mike Leigh’s Tender Loving Care, and Ryûsuke Hamaguchi’s Cannes prize winner All Of A Sudden.
This year’s festival brings 157 films including five Red Carpet Premieres, 12 Special Screenings, 13 Luminaries selections, 18 Discovery titles, 16 World Cinema selections, 17 documentaries, three After Dark films, four Guest Artistic Director presentations, 45 films in the Short Film Competition, and 24 films from the AFI Conservatory Showcase.
Some 45% of the selection is directed by women and 32% by BIPOC filmmakers. The festival will also present new works from Rodrigo Sorogoyen with The Beloved, Barbara Kopple with Union Town and Marie Kreutzer with Gentle Monster, as well as Radu Jude (Diary Of A Chambermaid), Fernando Eimbcke (Flies), and Clio Barnard (I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning).
As previously announced, AFI FEST will run at the TCL Chinese Theatres and open with the US premiere of Travis Knight’s Laika animation Wildwood and close with Siân Heder’s Being Heumann. Red Carpet Premieres include the world Premiere of Peter Berg’s The Mosquito Bowl, and screenings of Peter Farrelly’s I Play Rocky and Brad Bird’s Ray Gunn. This year’s guest artistic directors are Phil Lord and Chris Miller.
