The 40th anniversary edition of AFI FEST will run from October 21–25 at TCL Chinese Theatres in Hollywood.
Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere opened the 2025 festival, which featured current awards contenders Bugonia, The Testament Of Ann Lee, Sound Of Falling, The Voice Of Hind Rajab, Train Dreams, The President’s Cake, and Nuremberg.
Some 39% of the official selections were directed by women and 29% were directed by BIPOC filmmakers. AFI FEST is a qualifying festival for the shorts categories at the Oscars, Baftas, and Bifas.
Last year’s American Film Institute films of the year highlighted Bugonia, Train Dreams, Hamnet, One Battle After Another, Marty Supreme, and Sinners, among others. Eddie Murphy will receive the 51st AFI Lifetime Achievement Award at a gala tribute on April 18.
