Barbra Streisand will receive an honorary Palme d’Or from Cannes Film Festival at the awards ceremony of the 79th edition on Saturday, May 23.

“It is with a sense of pride and deep humility that I’m honored to join the company of past Honorary Palme d’Or recipients whose work has long inspired me,” said Streisand.

“In these challenging times, movies have the ability to open our hearts and minds to stories that reflect our shared humanity, and to perspectives that remind us of both our fragility and our resilience. Cinema transcends borders and politics, and affirms the power of imagination to shape a more compassionate world.”

Acclaimed as an actor, filmmaker and singer, Streisand received her first Oscar in 1969, for best actress in William Wyler’s Funny Girl. She then became the first woman to win the best original song award in 1978 for ‘Evergreen’, the love theme from A Star Is Born.

She has also been nominated for best actress in 1975 for The Way We Were, best picture as producer of The Prince Of Tides in 1993, and best original song in 1998 for ‘I Finally Found Someone’ from The Mirror Has Two Faces.

Streisand directed the latter two titles, as well as her 1983 directorial debut Yentl.

In 1986, Streisand created the Streisand Foundation, a US-based philanthropic organisation that supports civil liberties, women’s rights, and progressive causes.

Streisand’s other accolades include 11 Golden Globes and, as a music artist, 37 studio albums and 10 Grammy Awards.

“This year, we were keen to pay tribute to an artist who made her mark through the power of her art and her uncompromising pursuit of freedom,” said festival president Iris Knobloch. “As a woman, I am delighted to be able to express our admiration for this consummate creator and courageous citizen, whose example stands the test of time and continues to inspire.”

Festival director Thierry Fremaux described Streisand as “the legendary synthesis between Broadway and Hollywood, between the music hall stage and the big screen.”

The 2026 festival will run from May 12-23, with the official selection announced on April 9. Last week, Peter Jackson was announced as recipient of an honorary Palme d’Or at the opening ceremony on May 12.
