Black Bear has bulked up its US theatrical release pipeline, adding two films that it has previously taken as sales titles to markets – Leslie Mann and Isla Fisher comedy Spa Weekend, and Guy Ritchie’s thriller Wife & Dog starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Rosamund Pike.
The company also confirmed on Wednesday that it will release Matthew McConaughey drama thriller The Rivals Of Amziah King in limited release on August 14 before expanding wide a week later.
The previously announced Jason Statham thriller Shelter from Ric Roman Waugh opens on January 30, while Telluride, Toronto and upcoming Sundance selection Tuner starring Leo Woodall, Havana Rose Liu, and Dustin Hoffman arrives on May 22.
Spa Weekend will open wide on September and follows three best friends whose plans for a relaxing luxury trip are scuppered when their calamitous friend turns up. The cast includes Anna Faris and Michelle Buteau, and Jon Lucas and Scott Moore co-directed. Black Bear’s Teddy Schwarzman, John Friedberg and Michael Heimler produced with Suzanne Todd.
Wife & Dog (working title) will open wide on October 23 and follows the greedy Fairbank family during a succession battle. Friedberg, Ritchie and Ivan Atkinson served as producers. The cast includes Cosmo Jarvis, James Norton, Paddy Considine, and Anthony Hopkins.
Black bear launched its US theatrical business last year led by Ben Kramer and intends to release up to 12 titles each year focused on filmmaker-driven features and wide-release action and genre titles. The company’s first release, Toronto world premiere Christy starring Sydney Sweeney, opened in November.
