Toronto-based Breakthrough Entertainment has acquired independent film sales, packaging and production company Joker Films and named founder Tim J Brown evp of feature films. 

The move is part of Breakthrough’s drive into production and distribution and enables it to expand the catalogue.

The Joker Films portfolio encompasses children and family content, thrillers, comedy and documentaries including recent Sundance selection The Lifeguard starring Kristen Bell, as well as independent titles Cas & Dylan from Jason Priestley and Richie Mehta’s I’ll Follow You Down.

Brown will oversee day-to-day activities of the film distribution division and supervise acquisitions, sales and marketing.

Based in Breakthrough’s Vancouver offices, he reports to Breakthrough Entertainment president of distribution Nat Abraham. 

Brown founded Joker Films in 2009. Prior to that he  was president of distribution at Insight Releasing and vp of worldwide sales for Keystone Distribution.
