‘A Poet’

1-2 Special said on Thursday it had pounced on another Cannes premiere, taking all North American rights to Simón Mesa Soto’s A Poet, winner of the Un Certain Regard jury prize.

The fledgling distributor plans a theatrical release on the story about a failed writer who tries to nurture a teenage poet and learns life lessons along the way.

Ubeimar Rios, Rebeca Andrade, Guillermo Cardona, Allison Correa, Margarita Soto, and Humberto Restrepo star. The feature shot in Medellín, Colombia, with a cast largely made up of non-professionals.

Soto, Juan Sarmiento G., and Manuel Ruiz Montealegre served as producers.

The filmmaker’s first feature, Amparo, premiered in 2021 Cannes Critics’ Week and went on to win seven awards at the Colombian Film Academy’s 2022 Macondo Awards, including best director and best film. His short, Leidi, won the 2014 Cannes Palme d’Or.

1-2 Special negotiated the deal with Luxbox on behalf of the filmmakers.

Earlier this week, 1-2 Special announced it had acquired Cannes Directors’ Fortnight selection Mirrors No. 3.
