EXCLUSIVE: Cannes competition title Romeria, a semi-autobiographical story directed by Carla Simon, has sold to a slew of territories worldwide.
mk2 Films has agreed deals for Romeria with UK-Ireland (Curzon), Benelux (Cherry Pickers Film Distribution), Italy (I Wonder Pictures), Sweden (Folkets Bio), Denmark (Filmbazar), Norway (Arthaus), Findland (Cinemanse), Switzerland (Cineworx), Greece (Weirdwave), Portugal (Alambique), Baltics (Kino Pavasaris), Poland (New Horizons), Hungary (Vertigo), Bosnia Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia and Slovenia (MCF), Romania (Bad Unicorn) and Bulgaria (Beta).
Further sales include Australia and New Zealand (Palace), Japan (Gnome), South Korea (M&M International), Taiwan (Swallow Wings), Indonesia (Falcon) and all LATAM territories (Impacto).
As previously confirmed, Elastica Films, who also produced the project, will handle distribution in Spain. It is also heading to Germany via Piffl Medien and France through Ad Vitam.
Theatrical distribution in the US is confirmed and will be announced soon. The film will premiere locally at the New York Film Festival.
Romeria concludes the family cycle that Carla Simon started with Summer 1993 and Golden Bear winner Alcarràs. It follows Marina, an 18-year-old budding filmmaker who travels to Galicia, in the north of Spain, to meet the family of her family who died of AIDS when she was a child.
Talking to Screen International in Cannes, Simon said: “The big realisation with Romeria was that memory can be invented. I once believed if you don’t have memories, you can’t create them. Now I think the opposite: invention is part of memory, and cinema makes that possible. It helped me build my identity and make peace with the past. It doesn’t matter if the search leads nowhere.”
The film is produced by Maria Zamora at Elastica Films, in co-production with Spain’s Dos Soles Media and Germany’s Ventall Cinema.
Zamora, who was also behind Simon’s Alcarràs, discussed working with mk2 Films again: “They handled the sales for Alcarràs and we really trust their skill in reaching out to the best distributors for international auteur cinema. Some territories were already secured during the EFM and, after the official selection on Cannes and first market screenings, the main territories were confirmed.”
