‘Dune’, ‘The Power of the Dog’

Denis Villeneuve’s blockbuster Dune led the Bafta Film Awards nominations from Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog, with the nominations announced today (Thursday, February 3).

Dune received 11 nominations, including in best film, adapted screenplay, original score, and all eight technical categories.

The Power of the Dog scored eight nominations, including in best film, three times in the acting categories – and a best director nomination for Campion, who was the first woman to be nominated for the best director Bafta for The Piano in 1994.

Belfast was the third-most-nominated title overall with six; with three titles each receiving five – Licorice Pizza, No Time To Die and West Side Story.

UK indies After Love and Boiling Point scored four nominations each; as did Cyrano, King Richard – including a first Bafta nomination for Will Smith – and Netflix titles Don’t Look Up and Passing.

British films comprise six of the 12 most-nominated titles.

Three of the six nominees for best director are women: the second time at least half of the nominees are female, after four out of six last year, and bringing the total number of best director nominations for women to 14, compared to 224 for men. The Power of the Dog was the only one to make it into the best film selection; while two of the 10 outstanding British film nominees were directed by women. The number of female directors nominated across all categories is up to 12, from eight last year.

In a win for Bafta’s commitment to supporting new talent, 19 of the 24 acting selections are first-time nominees, including all six in the supporting actor category. First-time nominees include West Side Story’s Ariana DeBose and Mike Faist; Licorice Pizza’s Alana Haim; and The Worst Person In The World’s Renate Reinsve.

Seven non-white actors were nominated out of 24 spots – down significantly from 16 last year.

Universal leads the way among distributors with 25, despite Warner Bros and Netflix releasing the two most-nominated titles. Netflix is second with 22, followed by Disney on 19 and Warner on 16.

Notable independent distributors include Vertigo with Boiling Point’s four; and Modern Films, which has both three-time nominee Drive My Car and outstanding British debut selection Keyboard Fantasies

48 feature films were nominated in total, plus eight shorts. The nominations were announced from Bafta’s newly-renovated headquarters at 195 Piccadilly in London, by AJ Odudu and Tom Allen.

Rebel Wilson will host the awards ceremony for the first time, on March 13 at the Royal Albert Hall.
