‘Bad Day At The Office’

EXCLUSIVE: The Midnight Madness strand at Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF, August 13-19) will open with the world premiere of Chee Keong Cheung’s Bad Day At The Office.

Filmed from a first-person perspective using GoPro cameras, Bad Day At The Office follows a man who wakes up in a wrecked hotel room with no memory of the night before. He discovers a dead body in the bathtub, setting off a series of events that force him and a hotel maid into a deceptive world of confusion and conspiracy.

John Hannah and Radha Mitchell lead the cast, with Lana Parrilla, Tamer Hassan, Branko Tomovic, Victor Gardener, Roxanne McKee and Tim Fellingham.

The film is produced by Andreas Roald, Cheung and Ionna Karavela, for UK company Action Xtreme. Cheung wrote the script with Oliver Morran.

The Midnight Madness strand runs throughout EIFF, and has previously held world premieres including Ben Wheatley’s Bulk, and UK premieres of Alien: Romulus, The Substance and The Toxic Avenger.

Action Xtreme is part of Roald’s Sovereign Media Capital, where Cheung is head of distribution at Sovereign Films. Cheung described the feature as “an intense, very physical, technically complex and thrilling creative journey,” and credited EIFF festival director Paul Ridd, producer Emma Boa and the festival team “for their tireless efforts in championing independent filmmaking voices.”

Ridd described the film as “a tremendously propulsive, ultraviolent and darkly hilarious piece of work made with consummate craft, energy and clear gleeful delight in filmmaking and carnage.”

EIFF 2026 will open with Louis Paxton’s The Incomer and close with Louise Lockwood’s documentary Bel. The full EIFF programme will launch on July 1, with further information on the industry offering to follow.
