‘How Deep Is Your Love’

EXCLUSIVE: UK director Eleanor Mortimer’s deep-sea documentary How Deep Is Your Love has been acquired for theatrical distribution in the UK and Ireland by Tull Stories and will be released on September 20.

Ana Saiz’s London-based sales outfit Impronta Films has also sold Mortimer’s debut feature to Blue Ice Docs For Canada - also for a theatrical release - and educational platform Kanopy for the US.

The documentary will also have a limited theatrical release through Docs Against Gravity in Poland and in Switzerland through Filme für die Erde Schweiz [Films For The Earth]. Arts streaming platform Caixa Forum has taken rights to the film in Spain.

How Deep Is Your Love follows an expedition to one of the most remote regions on Earth, the Clarion–Clipperton Zone, twelve days from any land. Here, marine biologists explore the mysterious underwater life while also asking themselves whether their presence risks harming what they seek to protect.

The film screened at CPH:DOX, Hot Docs, Zurich Film Festival and Millennium Docs Against Gravity, and won awards at PariScience and Seoul International Eco Film Festival.

Produced by Jacob Thomas, How Deep Is Your Love was made through Luna Films and Ngauruhoe Film. Backing came from Sandbox Films, BFI Doc Society Fund, Sundance Documentary Film Programme, and Rooftop Films.

“I am overjoyed to be working with Tull Stories on the release of our documentary. It was a special experience to make this film – to spend two months on a ship with scientists and be among the first to see some of the incredible animals of the abyss. Jonny Tull is a force of nature in the distribution landscape and I’m excited to work with him to bring the film to the big screens of the UK,” said Mortimer.

The Suffolk-born director’s earlier short Territory (exploring the relationship between people and monkeys on the rock of Gibraltar) screened at more than 50 festivals, including Sundance, and won Best Short Documentary Award at Hot Docs.
