EXCLUSIVE: Vietnamese family comedy drama Mr. Hero has begun filming in Vietnam as a collaboration between HK Film and V Pictures from Vietnam, and Fremantle’s Singapore-based Beach House Pictures, with Thai Hoa leading the cast.

Directed by Vo Thach Thao, the film is shooting on location in Vietnam and will be distributed by CJ CGV Vietnam in April 2026. Timothy Linh Bui from Happy Canvas is producing along with Do Dinh Truong, Trinh Hoan and Tuong Vi.

The story is inspired by the true event of a man who became a national symbol of courage and hailed as a superhero after he caught a child falling from a 12-story window in 2011.

When director Thao questioned what if an act of heroism was fabricated, this provocative idea became the seed of Mr. Hero and subsequently co-wrote the script with Doan Hai Van. Thao is known for her hit series Cay Tao No Hoa with over 350 million viewers during its initial release in Vietnam.

Lead actor Hoa starred in two of this year’s biggest box office hits, The Tunnel and Hijack 78, the latter drawing over 2.5 million admissions in Vietnam. He is a popular comedic actor well known for his breakthrough role as a female cross-dresser in 2010’s Fool For Love.

“With a strong ensemble cast, a talented director, and an experienced powerhouse team, Mr. Hero has all the ingredients for a major box office success,” said Nguyen Hoang Hai, CEO of V Pictures, the production arm of CJ CGV Vietnam. “At its heart is a powerful, compelling story that will deeply resonate with audiences.”

This marks Beach House’s second venture into Vietnam, according to Conor Zorn, head of scripted at the Singapore-based production company. It has previously announced Dumb Luck, an adaptation of Vu Trong Phung’s 1936 Vietnamese satirical novel, with Phan Gia Nhat Linh as director and a cast headlined by Vietnamese pop star Mono.
