South Korean sales agent Finecut has picked up international sales rights to The Mutation, Time Of Cinema and Wrangler on the eve of the Asian Contents & Films Market (ACFM).
The first two titles are set to receive their world premieres at Busan while Wrangler is set to debut at Vancouver International Film Festival next month.
The Mutation marks the latest project from director Shin Su-won, whose Madonna played at Cannes in 2015 and Pluto received a special mention at the Berlinale in 2013. The film follows a man who is born to Korean parents as a Black individual, and a lesbian who still holds onto memories of her ex-lover. The unlikely pair embark on a journey together. The film, produced by June Film, will premiere in the competitive Vision Korea section of BIFF.
Time Of Cinema comprised two shorts, which explore the diverse ways in which films, theatres and audiences form relationships. The first is Chimpanzee, directed by Lee Jong-pil , who is known for commercial features such as Escape. The second is Naturally from Yoon Ga-eun, who has previously been selected for Venice and Toronto with The World Of Us and The World Of Love.
Screening in BIFF’s Panorama section, the film is presented by Tcast, a prominent Korean arthouse distributor which also operates Cinecube, the longest-standing arthouse cinema in Seoul.
Rounding out the fresh pickups is psychological thriller Wrangler, which has been selected to open the Korea spotlight section of the upcoming Vancouver International Film Festival. The feature stars
Choi Seung-yoon, who won several best actress awards for her role in Toronto 2022 title Riceboy Sleeps. She plays a dog trainer who is visited by her sister, who has a criminal record for murder and whose bizarre behaviour begins to unearth buried truths. Kim Seung-hwa, known for Disney+ series Seoul Busters, plays the sister. It marks the feature directorial debut of Seo Eun-sun and is produced by the Korean Academy of Film Arts.
Finecut’s ACFM slate also includes action-comedy Boss by Hive Media Corp and heartwarming drama Journey There, starring Kim Hye-ok of Phantom and US actor Justin H. Min from Netflix series’ Beef and The Umbrella Academy.
