‘Flee’

Jonas Poher Rasmussen’s Danish Oscar submission Flee, Questlove’s Summer Of Soul and The Rescue directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin are among the Producers Guild Of America’s (PGA) documentary feature nominees announced on Friday (December 10).

Rounding out the line-up are Jessica Kingdon’s Ascension, Matthew Heineman’s The First Wave, Nanfu Wang’s In The Same Breath, Megan Mylan’s Simple As Water, and Writing With Fire from Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh.

Flee premiered in Sundance earlier this year where it became the World Cinema Documentary Competition grand jury prize winner and was acquired by Neon. More recently it collected the best documentary Gotham Award and was named recipient of National Board Of Review’s (NBR) Freedom Of Expression Award. Rasmussen’s animated feature recounts the psychological impact on a man of his escape as a child from the Mujahadeen in Afghanistan in the 1990s.

Searchlight Pictures’ Summer Of Soul from Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson also debuted at Sundance and centres on the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival featuring the likes of Nina Simone, Sly and the Family Stone and Stevie Wonder and has also been winning awards. It won the NBR’s best documentary award and just won six trophies at Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards led by best documentary and best director.

Each selection is undergoing vetting for individual producer eligibility. Nominees for features, animated features, TV series and special and TV/streamed films will be announced on January 27, 2022.

Last season’s PGA best documentary winner My Octopus Teacher produced by Craig Foster went on to win the best documentary Oscar. The 33rd Annual Producers Guild Awards will take place on February 26, 2022.
