‘You Don’t Belong Here’

EXCLUSIVE: The UK’s Reason8 has boarded Romanian filmmaker Florin Şerban’s You Don’t Belong Here for sales ahead of its world premiere in Locarno’s international competition.

A physician is crushed when he learns the police suspect the teenage son he has raised alone of the murder of an old Romani man. The doctor discovers his son has another life at night, cycling through town vandalising cars with a gang of masked vigilantes.

Adrian Văncică and Teodor Butănescu lead the cast. Şerban also produces for Bucharest-based Fantascope Films.

Şerban’s debut feature If I Want To Whistle, I Whistle premiered in competition at the Berlinale in 2010, winning the Silver Bear. He most recently directed a two-part film series, Sarajevo 2018 premiere Love 1. Dog and Love 2. America. After several years spent focused on an educational project, he has now returned to filmmaking.

“The far-right movement in the film was inspired by the Russian StopXam group, also known on YouTube as Stop a Douchebag,” explained Şerban.

“The organisation was founded by NASHI, a Russian youth group widely characterised as Putin’s Prive Army. It is now defunct but gained its reputation fighting traffic violations in Moscow… The movement echoed throughout Eastern European countries but never had staying power in Romania.”

“What drew us to the film was Florin’s striking cinematic language paired with a very current topic of social and cultural makeover,” added Reason8’s Denis Krupnov.
