Full Circle Lab, a project development programme backed by the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), has announced the 20 projects selected for this year’s edition, which will take place online September 15-29.
The initiative, which is co-headed by Matthieu Darras and Izabela Igel, will be preceded by the Film Industry Conference (September 11-15), which will also be held online and open to a larger audience. Full Circle Lab was initially scheduled to take place in Manila in April, but was postponed due to the Covid-19 coronavirus.
First held in 2019 with a focus on projects from the Philippines, the initiative has opened up to projects from the wider Southeast Asian region this year, and has also added two labs dedicated to animation and series.
Filmmakers from the Philippines include Sheron Dayoc, who recently produced Arden Rod Condez’ John Denver Trending and whose directing credits include Women Of The Weeping River; Bradley Liew and John Torres, who are venturing into episodic series for the first time; and animation director Avid Liongren, who was recently awarded a development support grant from Locarno.
Projects from Southeast Asia include Don’t Cry Butterflies from Vietnam’s Duong Dieu Linh, produced by Singapore’s Tan Si En (Wet Season) and Malaysian filmmaker Aw See Wee’s Causeway (see full list below).
Mentors for the initiative include script consultants Ayman El Amir (Egypt) and Helen Beltramé-Linné (Brazil/Sweden) and producers Meiske Taurisia (Indonesia) and Giovanni Pompili (Italy). Juraj Krasnohorsky (Slovakia) and Aleksandra Świerk (Poland) will mentor the animation projects, while series projects will be mentored by Mmabatho Kau (South Africa) and Naomi Levari (Israel/Germany).
