‘First Cow’

Kelly Reichardt’s First Cow leads the nominations for the 30th IFP Gotham Awards, in which the nods for best feature are all directed by women.

Period drama First Cow, first seen at Telluride 2019 and released by A24, secured four nominations for best feature, screenplay and actor, for John Magaro, as well as breakthrough actor, for Orion Lee.

Titles that scored two nominations included Chloe Zhao’s Venice Golden Lion winner Nomadland, for best feature and actress Frances McDormand; and Eliza Hittman’s Never Rarely Sometimes Always, for best feature and breakthrough actor Sidney Flanigan.

Other titles in the best feature race include Kitty Green’s The Assistant and Natalie Erika James’ horror Relic. It means all five films in the leading category were directed by women.

Further double nominees included Netflix comedy-drama The Forty-Year-Old Version, with Radha Blank recognised in the breakthrough director and screenplay categories; Channing Godfrey Peoples’ Miss Juneteenth; Alex Thompson’s Saint Frances; and Andrew Patterson’s The Vast Of Night.

The late Chadwick Boseman received a best actor nomination for his performance in Netflix’s music drama Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

I’m Thinking Of Ending Things secured nods for actor Jesse Plemons and actress Jessie Buckley while romantic drama The Nest picked up nominations for actor Jude Law and actress Carrie Coon.

The eligibility period for the 2020 Gothams has been extended to February 28, 2021, meaning films that have yet to be released such as Nomadland will be eligible for the awards.

Films with budgets more than $35m are not considered and titles that are expected to show up at the Oscars, but are not eligible for the Gothams, include David Fincher’s Mank, Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods, George Clooney’s The Midnight Sky and Ryan Murphy’s The Prom.

As previously announced, the Gothams moved from its previously set November date to January 11, 2021 due to the disruption in the film calendar caused by the pandemic.

The event traditionally begins the film awards season and it will remain the first major ceremony to take place, as the Golden Globes, Baftas and Oscars have also shifted as a result of the virus crisis.

The award show itself will be a hosted in a hybrid format with Covid-19 safety measures in place.

The honorary Gotham actor tributes, director tribute and industry tribute will be announced at a later date.
