EXCLUSIVE: Signature Entertainment has acquired UK-Ireland rights for Macon Blair’s superhero horror comedy reboot The Toxic Avenger, starring Peter Dinklage, with a theatrical release planned for August 29.
Signature picked up the film from 193, the US sales company launched by Patrick Wachsberger and Legendary Entertainment earlier this year.
The US feature world premiered at Fantastic Fest, with a genre festival run including Beyond Fest and Sitges.
Dinklage leads the cast, which includes Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, Kevin Bacon, Elijah Wood, Julia Davis and Luisa Guerreiro.
Producers include Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz of Troma Entertainment, as well as Alex Garcia and Mary Parent of Legendary Pictures. Blair and Kaufman have written the script alongside Joe Ritter.
In the film, a shocking accident transforms a downtrodden janitor into a mutant vigilante. Armed with his signature mop, the unlikely hero battles freaks, gangsters and corrupt CEOs while trying to save his relationship with his son.
The new title is a reboot of the Toxic Avenger franchise, which began in 1984 with Kaufman and Herz’s original film.
“The Toxic Avenger is a perfect example of the type of super entertaining commercial genre movie that we’re always looking for at Signature,” said Signature Entertainment’s acquisitions and development manager Katie Wilkinson-Javes. “Macon Blair’s fresh take on the cult anti-hero radiates pure cinema madness and we can’t wait to introduce UK and Irish audiences to Peter Dinklage’s Toxic Avenger later this year.”
