Neon has acquired Hirokazu Kore-eda’s upcoming sci-fi feature Sheep In The Box for the US, the UK and Australia, according to reports.
Japanese auteur Kore-eda began shooting the film in September, with Haruka Ayase, from the director’s Our Little Sister, starring alongside comedian Daigo.
Neon is planning a nationwide release in the US.
Set in the near future, Sheep In The Box centres on a couple and the state-of-the-art humanoid they take into their home as their son. The title is said to have been inspired by French children’s novel The Little Prince.
Production companies are Fuji Television Network, Gaga Corporation, Toho and AOI Pro. Gaga is handling international sales with Goodfellas, offering the film to buyers at this week’s American Film Market.
Gaga, in co-operation with Toho, is set to release the film in Japan next year.
The project will be the first feature from Kore-eda since Monster, which premiered in Competition at Cannes in 2023, winning the queer palm and best screenplay.
Neon previously release Kore-eda’s Broker, which premiered at Cannes in 2022. Kore-eda won the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 2018 for Shoplifters.
Variety first reported the Neon deal on Sheep In The Box.
