Netflix has revealed theatrical release dates for Lee Chang-dong’s upcoming feature Possible Love, ahead of its debut at Venice and Toronto.
The film will open in South Korean cinemas on September 23, followed by Australia on October 22, and the US, Canada, UK, Ireland and Japan on October 23. It will become available to stream on Netflix from November 6.
The release places the anticipated feature in the awards corridor, suggesting Netflix may push the film for the next Academy Awards.
The film follows two married couples — a laid-off worker and his wife, and a documentary filmmaker and her husband — whose paths cross when the filmmaker sets out to film them, bringing both marriages face to face with their different lives and hidden desires.
The cast includes a powerhouse ensemble of Korean talent that includes Jeon Do-yeon, Sul Kyung-gu, Zo In-sung, and Cho Yeo-jeong.
It will receive its world premiere in Competition at Venice in early September followed by a North American premiere at Toronto later that same month in the Special Presentations section.
It is co-produced by Anonymous Content and Korea’s Nowfilm and Pinehouse Film.
Possible Love marks Lee’s first feature since 2018 psychological drama Burning, which won the Fipresci prize at Cannes and made the international feature film shortlist at the Oscars.
Lee is among the most acclaimed filmmakers working in South Korea today, having won the Silver Lion for best director at Venice for Oasis in 2002; the best screenplay award at Cannes for Poetry in 2010; before winning accolades with Burning.
He was presented with a lifetime achievement award at the Asian Film Awards in 2019 and received a further lifetime honour at Malaysia International Film Festival (MIFFest) last week.
