On this week’s episode of The Screen Podcast, the team pick out some under-the-radar titles for awards voters to look out for, and goes on a whistle-stop tour of the latest film festivals.

Watch above on video, or listen to below.

First, Screen contributing editor Wendy Mitchell, editor-in-chief Matt Mueller and deputy editor Louise Tutt are joined by awards and box office editor Charles Gant to recommend documentaries and non-English-language titles that Bafta and Ampas voters might have missed.

Next, they discuss the winners from the Bifa and the Gotham awards which saw Harry Lighton’s Pillion and Akinola Davies Jr.’s My Father’s Shadow pick up prizes on both sides of the pond.

Finally, we round up the talking points from the festivals in Doha, Tokyo and Tallinn with Screen reporters Ben Dalton, Mike Rosser and Ellie Calnan.

Speaking about the Bifas, Gant says: “I think the results were great because it was a real spread of love in the room and a lot of films got a boost. So Pillion definitely got gets a boost. They had a great, great weekend at the box office, then they win big at the Bifas. And now, now Harry Lighton has won adapted screenplay at the Gotham. So I feel like there’s real momentum getting behind that movie.

“It was great for My Father’s Shadow, but also Wasteman winning debut director [for Cal McCau] and Ballard Of Wallace Island which won two big awards for joint league performance and for screenplay.”

Adds Mueller: “You always feel a sort of strong enthusiasm being in the Bifas ceremony, that there’s some really great work still being done despite all the challenges in independent film that we talk about on this podcast.”
