The Man Who Cured The World

EXCLUSIVE: Berlin-based Pluto Film has boarded German directors Marcus Richardt and Lillian Rosa’s upcoming feature documentary Man Who Healed The World, as producer and international sales agent. Previously known as The Cure, the film is lead produced by Richardt’s  Favo Film with Basis Berlin.

The Man Who Healed The World tells the story of doctoral student Ingmar Hoerr, who accidentally discovered the revolutionary mRNA vaccine technology at the University of Tübingen, Germany, that would later protect millions from Covid-19. At first, Hoerr was ridiculed by experts and his discovery was roundly ignored, but the Covid pandemic in 2020 ignited huge interest in the vaccine. However, this was also the moment the biologist and former CEO of CureVac experienced his own health issues.

“[It is] one of the most extraordinary and timely stories of our era, “ said Pluto’s managing director Benjamin Cölle at this week’s International Festival Documentary Amsterdam (IDFA) this week.  “How a ridiculed discovery became the technology that saved millions of lives during the pandemic, at a time when we’re still processing what the pandemic meant for humanity.”

Further titles on Pluto Film’s line-up slate include Iranian filmmaker Soheil Beiraghi’s Bedad, which premiered in Karlovy Vary, and Pedro Cabeleira’s Cannes Acid title, Night Passengers.
