Serendipity Point Films and HGO Films have begun principal photography in Budapest, Hungary, on Embers starring Ralph Fiennes and Viggo Mortensen, with István Szabó directing and Robert Lantos producing.
Christopher Hampton adapted the screenplay from the novel by Sándor Márai. Charlotte Rampling, Katherine Langford, Louis Hofmann, and Gijs Blom round out the key cast.
Embers centres on Henrik and Konrad, former inseparable friends who reconnect decades after Konrad’s mysterious disappearance. Over the course of one night the secret that tore them apart emerges.
Producing alongside Lantos, whose credits include Eastern Promises with Mortensen and The Sweet Hereafter, are Tibor Krsko, and Ari Lantos. Szabó’s film oeuvre includes Being Julia, Mephisto, and Sunshine, another Lantos production that starred Fiennes.
Executive producers include Jan Mojto, Atom Egoyan, Tim Haslam, and Andrea Calderwood. Embankment Films handles international sales.
Embers is a Serendipity Point Films, HGO Films, and Potboiler Productions co-production. It is being produced with the support of MTVA, Beta Film, Bell Media, and CBC Films.
