Serendipity Point Films and HGO Films have begun principal photography in Budapest, Hungary, on Embers starring Ralph Fiennes and Viggo Mortensen, with István Szabó directing and Robert Lantos producing.
Christopher Hampton adapted the screenplay from the novel by Sándor Márai. Charlotte Rampling, Katherine Langford, Louis Hofmann, and Gijs Blom round out the key cast.
Embers centres on Henrik and Konrad, formerly inseparable friends who reconnect decades after Konrad’s mysterious disappearance and learn over the course of one evening the secret that tore them apart and the woman at the centre of it.
Producing alongside Lantos, whose credits include Eastern Promises with Mortensen and The Sweet Hereafter, are Tibor Krsko, and Ari Lantos. Szabó previously directed Sunshine and Being Julia, among others, which Lantos produced. Fiennes starred in Sunshine.
Executive producers include Jan Mojto, Atom Egoyan, Tim Haslam, and Andrea Calderwood. Embankment Films handles international sales.
Embers is a Serendipity Point Films, HGO Films, and Potboiler Productions co-production. It is being produced with the support of MTVA, Beta Film, Bell Media, and CBC Films.
