‘Two Prosecutors’

EXCLUSIVE: Sergei Loznitsa’s Two Prosecutors has secured sales to a slew of territories ahead of its world premiere in Cannes competition today (May 14).

Coproduction Office has sold the film to Lucky Red (Italy), Aerofilms (Czech Republic and Slovakia), Vertigo (Hungary), HBO Europe (PTV Eastern Europe), Filmstop (Estonia), MCF (Ex-Yugoslavia), Lev (Israel), and Falcon (Middle East). Pyramide will release the film in France and Progress is handling distribution in Germany.

Based on a novel by Georgy Demidov, the film focuses on a young prosecutor who sets out to challenge the system during Stalin’s Great Terror in 1937 after discovering a letter from a prisoner that is a desperate plea for help.

The film is produced by Kevin Chneiweiss for France’s SBS Productions, alongside Loznitsa’s Netherlands-based banner Atoms & Void. Additional producers include Germany’s Looks Film, Latvia’s White Picture, Romania’s Avanpost Media, and Lithuania’s Studio Uljana Kim.

SBS International is handling rights for the U.S. and U.K.

Ukrainian filmmaker Loznitsa returns to Cannes with his first fiction feature since black comedy Donbass played in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard in 2018.
