Location award winners La Palma

La Palma in the Canary Islands, Spain, won the top prize at the European Film Commissions Network (EUFCN) location awards on Sunday, February 15.

The awards ceremony took place at the Radisson Collection Hotel, Berlin, during the European Film Market (EFM).

La Palma (Canary Islands Film) was awarded the EUFCN Location Award 2025, selected by the jury, while Figueira da Foz (Portugal Film Commission) won the EUFCN Audience Location Award 2025, selected by the public through online voting.

The Spanish Island was highlighted by the recent Netflix miniseries La Palma, a fictional story that incorporated the 2021 volcanic eruption.

“This recognition celebrates not only the extraordinary landscapes of our island, but also the dedication of our local professionals, institutions, and community, who worked closely with the production team,” said Sergio Rodriquez, president of the Island Council of La Palma.

This is the second time the Canary Islands have been recognised, with El Hierro winning the award in 2019.

The Portuguese city of Figueira da Foz was awarded for the miniseries Broken Spies, about women spies during the 1940s.

“Winning this award shows that Portugal, and particularly Figueira da Foz, offers the right conditions and outstanding locations for major international audiovisual productions. Let Portugal be the setting for your next project,” said Ana Marquez, executive director of the Portugal Film Commission.

The other finalists were Belgrade, Serbia; Inari, Finland; and Sangerhausen, Germany.

The jury comprised Alessandro Bonino, production supervisor at Wildside; Andrea Keener, location manager; Gail McQuillan, head of TV production at Blueprint Pictures; Sue Quinn, supervising location manager; and Caroline von Kuhn, executive director of Oxbelly.
