EXCLUSIVE: Curzon has picked up Carmen Emmi’s Plainclothes for UK-Ireland from Magnify, ahead of its UK premiere at SXSW London.
Magnify has also closed further deals with distributors across multiple territories, including Filmin (Spain & Portugal), Cinemien & Tongariro (Benelux, German-speaking Europe, CEE, Italy, Baltics), Films We Like (Canada), Lev (Israel), Falcon (Indonesia), and Aardwolf (airlines), with additional deals currently in progress.
Magnolia Pictures will release the film theatrically in the US.
The Sundance world premiere stars Tom Blyth and Russell Tovey and is the feature debut of New York filmmaker Emmi.
It is set in 1990s Syracuse and follows a promising undercover agent, assigned to lure and arrest gay men, who defies professional orders when he becomes infatuated with a target. As their relationship develops he is forced to confront the intolerance of the police force and his own family.
The film won the winner of the dramatic special jury award for ensemble cast at Sundance. It is produced by Colby Cote, Arthur Landon, Eric Podwall and Vanessa Pantley for the UK’s Lorton Entertainment and LA-based Page1 Entertainment.
“Plainclothes is a gripping psychological drama with two exceptional performances from Tom Blyth and Russell Tovey,” said Damian Spandley, managing director programme and sales at Curzon. “It marks Carmen Emmi as a filmmaker to watch and what better way to start our partnership than by hosting the premiere at Curzon Hoxton this evening (June 5).”
Emmi described Curzon as a “true champion of independent cinema” and added he is “thrilled that UK and Eire audiences will get to experience Plainclothes and the incredible work of Tom Blyth, Russell Tovey, Christian Cooke – each of whom calls the UK home”.
Landon noted: “Like many others in the British film industry I grew up watching movies in a Curzon cinema, so to be partnered with Philip Knatchbull and his incredible team is a childhood dream come true.”
