UK production company Cantilever Media is partnering with international VFX and animation firm ReDefine Originals on a first-look co-production deal, for animated feature films for the kids and family market.
Both companies will bring projects to the combined venture with the aim of producing two to three features per year, over an initial three-year period.
ReDefine will be the studio for the projects, with Cantilever Media producing and Cantilever’s distribution company Kazoo Films taking UK rights.
ReDefine Originals is owned by UK-Indian VFX giant DNEG, with fellow DNEG Group company Prime Focus Studios serving as co-producing partner on the slate of features.
Cantilever and ReDefine are already collaborating on animated feature Bollywoof for Sky Cinema, with Newscope Films, for a Q3 2027 release.
Based on Terry Pratchett’s book, Toby Genkel and Florian Westermann’s The Amazing Maurice debuted in 2022 as a Sky Original film in the UK.
It followed a streetwise cat and his gang of rats who come up with the perfect money making scheme; Hugh Laurie, Emilia Clarke, David Thewlis, Himesh Patel, Gemma Arterton, Hugh Bonneville, Rob Brydon, Peter Serafinowicz and David Tennant led the voice cast.
Cantilever Media’s production slate also includes The Amazing Maurice 2 in co-production with Germany’s Ulysses Filmproduktion; and Unstable, in co-production with Canada’s Carpe Diem Productions.
“We already have a great working relationship with ReDefine Originals and it was a logical next step to formalise this into a first-look co-production agreement,” said Andrew Baker, Cantilever Media CEO. “For Cantilever it is exciting to have a deal with a UK- and India-based animation studio which we can work with alongside our own UK distribution company Kazoo Films. This will enable us to work on our own projects from development through to release. We look forward to unveiling our new projects soon.”
“Together, we’re building on our shared vision of accelerating the creation and production of standout CG animated features for the kids and family market by leveraging the latest innovations in real-time production workflows,” said ReDefine Originals managing director Greg Gavanski of the deal. “Our talented global teams are working across design, storyboarding, editorial, and all stages of animation production, to set the highest bar for what can be achieved in independent animation.”
