Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey crossed $1bn at the worldwide box office on Thursday (August 6), marking the third film Universal has been involved with this year to accomplish the feat.
As of Friday morning the tentpole adaptation featuring an all-star ensemble led by Matt Damon stood at $429.6m in North America heading into its fourth session and $578.8m from international markets.
The Odyssey will soon overtake The Dark Knight Rises on $1.1bn to rank as Nolan’s biggest global hit and is the third in his career to cross the milestone including The Dark Knight. Numbers are not adjusted for inflation.
The feature is forecast to add $28.5m in its upcoming fourth weekend, which would put the running total at approximately $458.2m.
The top ten markets are: UK and Ireland on $75.3m, France on $52.4m, Italy on $46.9m, Germany on $35.2m, Australia on $29.8m, Mexico on $28m, Spain on $27.3m, India on $19.6m, Netherlands on $13.9m, and Saudi Arabia on $13.1m.
Universal has distributed two other tentpoles that have crossed $1bn worldwide this year: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and Michael, which Lionsgate distributed in North America.
Industry-wide The Odyssey becomes the fifth film to gross more than $1bn in North America including the two above-mentioned releases as well as Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Toy Story 5.
