‘Deadly Sweet’

The Venice International Film Festival has programmed Tinto Brass’s 1967 pop thriller Deadly Sweet as its “pre-opening” night film on September 1.

The London-set film starring Jean-Louis Trintignant and Ewa Aulin, which is included in this year’s Venice Classics programme, will screen in a newly restored digital 4k version.

Deadly Sweet tells the story of a strange, brief encounter between a man and a girl that takes place in front of a dead body.

It first premiered out of competition at the 1967 Venice festival, produced by Ermanno Donati and Luigi Carpentieri.

The restoration of Deadly Sweet by the CSC-Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome, with support from Netflix, used materials by rights holder Compass Film.

Deadly Sweet is one of a group of films shot by Brass in London, followed by 1969’s Attraction and 1970’s Dropout.

Like them, it is filled with references to pop art and comic art. Brass enlisted popular cartoonist Guido Crepax as a graphic consultant for the film.

Brass later became known for his erotic films such as Caligula and All Ladies Do It.

The 83rd Venice International Film Festival takes place from September 2-12.
