The American Film Institute board said on Wednesday that Tom Cruise will receive its 52nd AFI Life Achievement Award at a gala tribute in Hollywood on April 24, 2027.

Cruise currently stars in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Digger and over the course of a career spanning more than 40 years his films have grossed close to $13bn at the worldwide box office.

Highlights include the Top Gun and Mission: Impossible franchises, A Few Good Men, Rain Man, The Last Samurai, and Interview With The Vampire. He earned best actor Oscar nominations for Born On The Fourth Of July and Jerry Maguire, a supporting actor nod for Magnolia, and a best picture nomination as a producer on Top Gun: Maverick. He is in contention this season for his role in Digger.

AFI board chair Kathleen Kennedy said, “Tom Cruise is a global icon. As an actor and producer, he brings an extraordinary commitment to everything he does. What I especially admire is his deep belief in movies and their ability to bring people together. That passion has made him an extraordinary ambassador for American film around the world.”

Previous AFI Life Achievement Award recipients include Eddie Murphy last year, Denzel Washington, Nicole Kidman, Julie Andrews, Steven Spielberg, Mike Nichols, and David Lean.
