‘Mercy’, ‘H Is For Hawk’, ‘Return To Silent Hill’

Sony’s Mercy leads new releases in UK and Ireland cinemas this weekend as UK drama H Is For Hawk and horror Return To Silent Hill also launch.

Chris Pratt stars in Timur Bekmambetov’s sci-fi Mercy which is debuting in 480 sites. Set in 2029, the story follows a detective on trial for murder who has 90 minutes to prove his innocence to an advanced AI judge. Rebecca Ferguson and Annabelle Wallis also star.

Return To Silent Hill is out in 360 cinemas via Entertainment Film Distributors. Loosely based on the video game, the horror film follows a broken man who receives a mysterious letter from an old love inviting him back to the town where they met.

Lionsgate is opening H Is For Hawk in 342 locations. Claire Foy stars in the Toronto premiere as a grieving daughter who adopts a Goshawk. Philippa Lowthorpe directs the feature, adapted from the best-selling memoir, with further cast including Brendan Gleeson and Denise Gough. 

Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor lead The History Of Sound, opening in 295 venues via Universal. The Cannes premiere follows two men who travel together in 1920 to record folk songs from local communities. Oliver Hermanus directs.

‘No Other Choice’

Mubi is launching Park Chan-wook’s No Other Choice in 211 cinemas. The South Korean thriller centres on a man who is so desperate to get a job that he begins killing off the other applicants. It first premiered at Venice Film Festival and was nominated for two Golden Globes.

Irish sports drama Saipan opens in 170 locations in the UK through Vertigo Releasing. Steven Coogan and Eanna Hardwicke star in the true story of footballer Roy Keane who fell out with Ireland manager Mick McCarthy in the lead up to the 2002 World Cup. The film was released in the island of Ireland by Wildcard Distribution earlier this month. 

Indian action Border 2 is out in 120 sites via AA Films. Set against the backdrop of the India-Pakistan war of 1971, the sequel follows young Indian fighters facing an even greater threat.

In event releases, National Theatre Live is screening a production of Hamlet while Trafalgar Releasing has music documentary Megadeth: Behind The Mask in 39 locations.

UK boxing drama Heavyweight opens in 4 venues via BUFF Studios. Nicholas Pinnock and Jason Isaacs star in the debut feature from Nigerian-Lebanese filmmaker Christopher M. Anthony about the mental state of a heavyweight fighter and his team as fight time approaches.
