EXCLUSIVE: UK-Ireland writer-director Rhys Marc Jones’ feature debut Black Church Bay, starring Tom Cullen and Heartstopper’s Joe Locke, has wrapped its shoot in Anglesey, North Wales.

The mystery thriller is produced by Scotland-based Alex Polunin for Ossian International and Tristan Goligher for London-based The Bureau, with The Bureau Sales handling international rights. Cullen previously starred in Andrew Haigh’s 2011 film Weekend, produced by Goligher. 

Black Church Bay is about a teacher whose world unravels after an intimate encounter with a younger man and explores the lengths someone will go to to hide their true self.  The cast also includes Marli Siu and Rakie Ayola. 

The film was developed with BBC Film, iFeatures and Cannes’ Cinéfondation Résidence. Production financiers are BBC Film, Ffilm Cymru Wales awarding National Lottery Funding and Screen Scotland, as well as private financiers, LA-based Manzini Films, UK-Based Black Heron, Elephant Music and Kamila Serkebaeva, plus Brazil-based Daniel Staut.

“I’m immensely grateful to my longtime creative partners, cinematographer Lasse Ulvedal Tolbøll and designer Paix Robinson as well as all the new relationships fostered over the last few months that helped me realise this ambitious script,” said Jones.

“We’re excited to show audiences the exquisite Isle of Anglesey in a way it’s never been seen before.”

The executive producers are BBC Film’s Claudia Yusef and Alice Ojha, Ffilm Cymru Wales’ Kiah Simpson and Kimberley Warner,  Screen Scotland’s Leslie Finlay, Manzini Films’ Lola Manzini, Black Heron’s Murugan Thiruchelvam, Elephant Music’s Vikram Gudi, Serkebaeva and Staut.
