Mandy Chang has been appointed as the first CEO of the Documentary Film Council (DFC), the UK organisation for filmmakers and industry professionals in the documentary ecosystem.

Chang takes over from Steve Presence and Emily Copley, who served as joint acting CEOs since the DFC’s launch in 2023.

Chang is a well-respected executive who most recently served as global head of documentaries at Fremantle, and was previously commissioning editor of the BBC’s Storyville strand from 2017 to 2021.

She has directed, produced and executive produced over 100 films and series across film, television and radio. Her recent feature film projects include Two Strangers Trying Not To Kill Each Other, It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley, The Mole Agent, Writing With Fire and Welcome To Chechnya.

“Documentary filmmaking is a vital part of our culture, and yet our community faces unprecedented challenges. We need an organisation like the DFC to advocate for our industry,” said Chang. “While I will continue to work on independent documentaries, I am fully committed to and excited about building an organisation that will benefit our entire documentary community.”

The DFC has also brought on two new trustees to its board: writer, filmmaker and programmer Zara Meerza, and Julian Carrington, executive director of the Documentary Organization of Canada.

Since it was founded in 2023, the member-owned DFC has grown into a national organisation for documentary, representing almost 1,000 filmmakers and industry professionals. It exists to strengthen and advocate for the UK’s documentary sector, including as the voice of the documentary community to industry and government, and to build a more sustainable, inclusive and resilient future for non-fiction storytelling.
