EXCLUSIVE: Vietnam’s V Studios has brought its first in-house production Red Woman to the Asian Contents & Film Market (ACFM) as the company continues to expand its output.
The mystery horror, due to open on November 27 in Vietnam, is about a seductive demon with a tragic past who draws her victims into an amusement park where punishment is their last chance of redemption. The cast includes Minh Hang (Naked Truth), Rima Thanh Vy (Furies) and Khuong Le (Meet Me At The Eclipse).
The film makes extensive use of visual effects through director Jack Carry On’s background of more than a decade of experience in VFX on short-form and commercial projects.
A sequel is also being developing a sequel to expand the Red Woman universe.
The company, a subsidiary of CJ CGV Vietnam, rebranded from V Pictures earlier this year and is growing its ambitions as a studio.
“We aim to accompany a project throughout the entire lifecycle of its content and IP – from concept development, financing, production, distribution and marketing to the exploitation of IP,” said V Studios director Nguyen Hoang Hai.
“Our long-term goal is to shift from the mindset of making a movie to building an IP – creating Vietnamese content assets capable of long-term development and expansion into multiple business ventures.
“Leveraging our deep understanding of the local market and audience, V Studios stepped into production to create high-quality, diverse films that meet the growing demands of our audiences. We won’t just make more Vietnamese films. We want to make the films that Vietnamese audiences truly want to see and looking further ahead, to build Vietnamese IPs strong enough to step into the international market.”
At ACFM, V Studios is also promoting Flying Cows produced by Nguyen Huu Thi Tuong Vi who is behind local hits Mai and The House Of No Man. It is directed by Gen Z filmmaker Nguyen Pham Thanh Dat, whose award-winning short Wooden Fish became the first Vietnamese short to release officially in commercial cinemas nationwide.
Flying Cows is developed from his short Ashes Of Milk and marks his feature debut. It follows a debt-ridden worker who is hired to steal a secret formula that can make people fly. Due to open on November 6, the film stars Nguyen Hung and Huy Tit, both from local hit Red Rain, and Vo Dien Gia Huy.
