EXCLUSIVE: XYZ Films will commence sales in Cannes on serial killer thriller The Edge Of Normal starring Chloe Grace Moretz and Rupert Friend for Carlota Pereda, the acclaimed Spanish director of Piggy who makes her English-language debut.
Production is scheduled to begin on May 27 in Utah.
Moretz will star in the previously announced project as Reeve LeClaire, who is haunted by the memory of teenage captivity at the hands of a sadist and fears a return to the nightmare when she is asked to mentor a survivor and gets pulled into a game of cat and mouse. Friend will portray LeClaire’s psychiatrist.
Matt Venne wrote the screenplay, with revisions by Lori Evans Taylor, who wrote New Line’s May 16 horror release Final Destination: Bloodlines, based on Carla Norton’s book of the same name.
XYZ Films is producing and financing The Edge Of Normal and producing partners include Vanishing Angle, and Andrew Deane and Ava Jamshidi for Industry Entertainment. CAA Media Finance and XYZ Films jointly represent US rights.
Pereda broke out with her Sundance 2022 horror Piggy, based on her 2018 short of the same name that did the festival rounds and won the Goya for best short film in 2019, as well as the 2020 Slamdance AGBO Fellowship Award.
Moretz’s credits include Kick-Ass, Carrie, and Let Me In, and Amazon MGM Studios’ upcoming comedy Oh. What. Fun. with Felicity Jones, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Danielle Brooks.
Friend has starred in Michel Franco’s Berlinale selection Dreams, Hitman: Agent 47, The Young Victoria, and TV hit Homeland, and will soon be seen in Wes Anderson’s Cannes Competition selection The Phoenician Scheme at Focus Features.
