EXCLUSIVE: Chinese filmmaker Zou Jing’s debut feature A Girl Unknown, about a Chinese woman’s lifetime adoption journey, has found a home with distributors across the globe following its world premiere at Cannes Critics’ Week.
Pyramide International has sold the film to O’Brother for Benelux, Ritual Films in Canada, New Cinema in Israel, March Films in Japan, Lighthouse in Singapore, Trigon in Switzerland, Mars in Turkey and Fivia in the former Yugoslavia. Greenwich Entertainment acquired the title for US distribution with a planned 2027 release and Pyramide will release it in France on January 27, 2027.
A Girl Unknown explores China’s strict one-child policy through the life of a young Chinese woman who lives with three different families and changes her name each time, as she navigates her identity over the years. The film is headlined by rising actress Li Gengxi who starred in Bi Gan’s 2025 Cannes competition entry Resurrection, alongside child actress Cao Ruofan.
The China-France co-production is produced by Wang Yang of Memoria Films, Cao Xi of Emei Film Group, Didar Domehri of Maneki Films, Edmond Tao of Eagle Media, and Xu Jiahan of Pure Light Films.
The film won this year’s Gan Foundation Award for distribution and Fipresci prize in Cannes after earning Critics’ Week’s Next Step Hildegard award in 2024. It also won the CineVision competition prize for best international film by an emerging director at Munich International Film Festival.
