To those promoting this event: We are Borderline Arts Ensemble, a New Zealand dance company who premiered our work titled Strasbourg 1518 on 12th March 2020 in the New Zealand Festival of the Arts. It is deeply distressing that so little respect is granted to fellow artists that Johnathan Glazer, the BBC and Saddler's Wells would knowingly appropriate the title of our work that deals with the exact same subject matter. Where is the engagement with the existing material surrounding this event and the recent artistic explorations of it? Google and social media lead you right to our production. We are so saddened by this production’s decision to knowingly use the same title of an existing original work. We are extremely concerned for what this will mean for our ability to tour our show #Strasbourg1518, when major dance house Saddler’s Wells and the BBC are promoting their duplicate with all the force of their wide public platforms and established publicity channels. Are we now forced into renaming our work in order to tour it? The spirit of cultural imperialism behind this conscious decision is galling. We have been developing this work for well over two years, much longer than the fast and furious 13 weeks of Johnathan Glazer and his iPhone piece. Details of our preexisting work can be found at www.strasbourg1518.com . Heartbroken, the artists of Borderline Arts Ensemble @borderlineartsensemble
