Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban stayed top of the US charts in its second week at theweekend as it added $35.1m for $158.1m according to studio estimates, beatingoff spirited openings by three new releases.

Warner Bros' family adventure finished some way ahead of the restof the pack, which was led by Universal's The Chronicles Of Riddick on $24.6m.

David Twohy's poorly reviewed picture, a sequel to Pitch Black that stars Vin Diesel as anintergalactic fugitive who encounters a greedy despot, averaged $8,922 from2,757 sites. Thandie Newton, Judi Dench and Colm Feore star.

Dreamworks' Shrek 2 fell one place to third on $24m for $354m in its fourth weekend,making it the biggest animated release ever and the ninth biggest picture ofall time.

Despite ominous murmurings of a troubled production in recentweeks, Paramount's The Stepford Wives overcame mostly lacklustre reviews to muster a decent$22.2m in fourth place, averaging $7,262 from 2,057 venues.

Nicole Kidman and MatthewBroderick star in Frank Oz's remake of the 1975 thriller about a town where thewomen are subjected to a sinister plan. Christopher Walken and Bette Midleralso star.

Fox's Garfield opened in fifth place on $21.7m, averaging $7,005 from 3,094. Thecritics got the knives out for this live-action/animated mix adaptation of JimDavis' popular cartoon strip about a sarcastic and lazy feline.

Bill Murray voices Garfield and the picture stars Breckin Meyerand Jennifer Love Hewitt.

Elsewhere Fox's The Day After Tomorrow added $14.6m for $153.2m in its fourthweek and fell three to sixth, while Warner Bros' Troy grossed $3.5m for $125.7m in its fifthweek and slipped three places to eighth.

Paramount's teen comedy Mean Girls continued to hold its own with the bigboys but is on the way out now after slipping four to 10th on $1.5m for $81.3min its seventh week.

Next weekend's wide releases include Buena Vista's Jules Verneadaptation Around The World In 80 Days starring Jackie Chan and the acclaimed British comedianSteve Coogan; Fox's comedy Dodegball: A True Underdog Story starring Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn;and Dreamworks' comedy The Terminal, which stars Tom Hanks and Catherine Zeta-Jones.
