Hong Kong producer Stephen Shiu’s 3D Sex And Zen: Extreme Ecstasy is raising temperatures at the AFM just a few days after it wrapped in Hong Kong.

Sales agent Tai Seng Entertainment has announced early pre-sales on the film to Golden Village for Singapore and Dream Movie for Australia and New Zealand. In Hong Kong the film will be released by One Dollar Distribution. The sales agent expects to announce further deals before the end of the market.

Billed as the world’s first 3D erotic film, the $3m production is loosely based on Shiu’s 1991 production Sex And Zen, which is one of Hong Kong’s highest-grossing adult movies.

“When we looked at the original we found the main theme of karma and re-incarnation is a bit outdated,” said Shiu’s son, also called Stephen Shiu, who produced the reboot with his father. “It’s now closer to a love story based on the conflict between sex and love.”

Commercials director Christopher Sun shot the film in stereoscopic 3D on RED digital cameras. The cast of Japanese and Chinese actors includes Hong Kong’s Vonnie Lui and Japanese adult video stars Saori Hara and Suou Yukiko.

Shiu Jnr describes the film as explicit but releasable - in Hong Kong, where it’s scheduled for release in late April 2011, it should get a Category III rating for people aged 18 and over.

The filmmakers have already witnessed a huge amount of interest in the film - tour groups from mainland China, where the film is unlikely to ever be released, came to Hong Kong to watch the shooting.
