Major Korean distributor Showbox Mediaplex has bought Andrei Konchalovsky's Nutcracker: The True Story from Odyssey Entertainment.

The deal follows Showbox's acquisition of Chilled In Miami from Mandate International, which was announced yesterday.

Nutcracker is based on the story that inspired the well-known ballet and stars John Turturro, Nathan Lane and Dakota Fanning sibling Elle Fanning.

Vice president of acquisitions Chris H. Lee signed the deals with Odyssey's sales manager James Scott and Mandate International president Helen Lee Kim respectively.

'This will be an ambitious year for Showbox acquisitions,' Lee told Screendaily. 'We're looking for several films to open in 2009, and are especially considering large-scale ones that fit the Showbox brand image to open in the high seasons.'

Lee added that the two recent acquisitions are in addition to Showbox's existing 2008 slate of eight high-profile films prepping for 2008 release, starting this December with P.S. I Love You and including films such as My Blueberry Nights, Red Cliff and Ong Bak 2.

Chilled will star Renee Zellweger as a high-flying corporate exec who goes to a small town to close down a plant where she falls in love with a local played by Harry Connick Jr.
