At Pusan’s Asian Film Market, Japanese distributor Toei has signed a deal with Korean buyer Mountain Pictures for Junji Sakamoto’s mystery thriller Strangers In The City.

The film made its world premiere at the Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF) on Oct 11 in the Windows on Asian Cinema section, and it is due to play in the upcoming Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) as well.

“For us, it works better to world premiere in Pusan for international promotion,” says Tadayuki Okubo, manager of International Sales at Toei.

Strangers In The City stars Toru Nakamura, who is also known to local audiences for his performance opposite Jang Dong-gun in the futuristic thriller 2009 Lost Memories. The two stars had a reunion at PIFF a few days ago.

In Strangers In The City, Nakamura plays a former teacher who left a prestigious Tokyo prep school following a scandalous relationship and subsequent marriage to one of his students. Now divorced and teaching at a “cram school” which helps tutor students for exams, he tracks down clues about a student of his who has disappeared, only to uncover terrible secrets about the school and his own past.

Sakamoto’s prolific filmography includes yakuza film Another Battle, sword fight film Zatoichi To The Last, and multiple award-winning film Face.
