Mumbai-based UTV Motion Pictures and Indian filmmaker Imtiaz Ali [pictured] will co-produce an official Hindi remake of Korean romantic action comedy My Girlfriend Is An Agent.

Ali will be creative producer on the project, through the production company recently set up by his wife Preety Ali, PI Films. The project marks Preety Ali’s first foray into production. It will also mark the directorial debut of acclaimed choreographer Bosco.

The original, directed by Shin Terra and starring Kim Ha-neul and Kang Ji-hwan, was a huge hit when it was released by Lotte Entertainment in Korea in 2009. It tells the story of two spies, once in love but now at each other’s throats, on a mission to stop a Russian crime group from stealing an advanced chemical weapon.

UTV acquired the remake rights to the film in a deal involving its Korean sales agent M-Line Distribution. Indian producers are increasingly acquiring remake rights rather than churning out unofficial remakes of international films.

UTV Motion Pictures CEO Siddharth Roy Kapur said: “From the day our team at UTV saw [My Girlfriend Is An Agent], we knew it was a film we just had to remake in Hindi. The characters of the two main leads are so endearing and the situations they find themselves in so hilarious, that it’s the perfect recipe for an action romcom.”
