Work is underway in St Agnes, Cornwall on the construction of a $9m (£5.76m) film studio complex, the first to be built in the South West of England.

The studio is one of many currently in planning or construction stage throughout the UK - at least seven are thought to be currently at planning stage. One of these - a proposal by the Full Picture Company - is also in the South West. It is reportedly on the verge of submitting a planning application bid later in the year.

The South West of England is a commonly used location in the UK, but until now it has never had studio facilities of its own. Recent films to have shot in the area include forthcoming Bond film, Die Another Day, and Working Title's Johnny English starring Rowan Atkinson.

Film producer Alex Swan, whose company South West Film Studios is backing the St Agnes project with help from a European funding grant, says about 12 features have shot in Cornwall this year. He believes the studio will provide a focal point for future film projects that shoot in the region.

The studio will comprise two covered sound stages, while the complex will have ten full time staff. Swan expects the studio to open in a years time.
