Sean Connery is set to throw his weight behind the long-gestating Scottish period epic Mary, Queen Of Scots.

Fountainbridge Films, the Scottish actor's production outfit, is set to board the lavish period piece, which is set up with co-financiers BBC Films and Intermedia. Intermedia already has a production pact with Fountainbridge.

Acclaimed British writer Jimmy McGovern, who has completed a first draft, said that Fountainbridge is to co-produce with Gill Parry and Catherine Aitken from Scotland's Raging Star Films, who originally set the project up with McGovern.

At this stage, there are no plans for Connery to appear in the $20m project - although the film-makers are not ruling it out. The story centres on the Queen's time as a young woman in Scotland, and her love affair with an earl.

The BBC's David Thompson and Robert Cooper are executive producing, along with Intermedia's Guy East and Nigel Sinclair.

McGovern, best known for his work in British TV drama, most recently wrote the screenplay for Stephen Frears' Liam, a hit with festival audiences last year at both Venice and Toronto. Fountainbridge has credits including Just Cause and Entrapment. Intermedia and Fountainbridge president Rhonda Tollefson declined to comment.
