Montreal-based distributor Equinoxe Films has picked up Canadian distribution rights on Nic Balthazar's directorial debut Ben X.

The film, which shared the top prize at the Montreal World Film Festival as well as winning the audience and ecumenical prizes, is being sold internationally by French sales outfit Films Distribution.

Inspired by real events, the story follows a 17-year-old autistic boy who gets his revenge on the bullies who are harassing him by using strategies honed through his online gaming alter ego.

Balthazar adapted the screenplay from his own book and stage play. The film stars Greg Timmermans, Laura Verlinden, Marijke Pinoy, Pol Goossen, Titus De Voogdt and Maarten Claeyssens.

The film will be released in Canada in the spring of 2008.
