German sales powerhouse Beta has reported a roaring start to the market. Distribution rights for Berlinale-winner Child’s Pose [pictured] and German box-office hit Oh Boy are almost sold out.
Here at the Marché, the Munich-based company closed a number of deals, hawking Child’s Pose to Spain (Golem), Japan (Magic Hour), Israel (Lev Cinemas), Norway (Tour de Force), Denmark (Camera), Poland (Aurora), Czech Republic/Slovakia (Film Europe), Hungary (Cirko), Bulgaria (Bulgaria Film), Brazil (Imovision) and Mexico (Cinemas Nueva).
Calin Peter Netzer’s film will be released in Germany by X-Verleih this week on May 23rd.
The tragic-comedy Oh Boy,starring Tom Schilling, has gone to Japan (Cetera), Russia (P&I Films), Hungary (Cirko), Norway (Fidalgo), Serbia/Montenegro (Discovery) and Mexico (Cinema Nueva Era).
Oh Boy will be released in Benelux by ABC-Cinemien on May 30 and in France (Diaphana) on June 5.
Japan’s New Select has snapped up The Notebook by director János Szász. Here in Cannes, Beta Cinema is showing a first teaser of the Hungarian-German WWII drama based on Agota Kristof’s famous novel about two young brothers who grow up in a village on the Hungarian border during war time. Being mistreated by their cruel grandmother they must learn every trick of evil to survive in the absurd world of adults.
Academy Award-nominee Christian Berger (The White Ribbon, Caché) serves as DOP.
Further deals have been signed for The Girl With Nine Wigs by Marc Rothemund with Poland (Aurora) and Taiwan (Swallow Wings). The Norwegian/German thriller Two Lives was bought by Poland (Aurora). South Korea’s Company L snapped up the family-entertainment feature Famous Five I.
