EXCLUSIVE: Japan’s Gaga Corporation and Wild Bunch are jointly handling sales on Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Like Father, Like Son, marking the second time they’ve collaborated on one of the director’s films.

Wild Bunch is handling all rights outside Asia, while Gaga is selling Asian territories and will release the film in Japan. The two companies had a similar arrangement on Kore-eda’s I Wish, a gentle story of two brothers trying to reunite their divorced parents.

Like Father, Like Son revolves around a family that is thrown into torment when informed by a hospital that they were given the wrong baby and their six-year-old son is not their child.

“It’s the story of a successful man who thinks he has everything until he receives this phone call,” said Gaga chairman Tom Yoda. “It’s slightly more hard-hitting than [Kore-eda’s] last film.”

Fukuyama Masaharu plays the father and Ono Machiko, Lily Franky and Kiki Kilin also star. Produced by Fuji TV, Amuse and Gaga, the film will be released in Japan by Gaga on October 5.

Gaga is also handling international sales on animated feature Hanakappa, based on a popular TV series and financed by a production committe headed by Toho. Dentsu has Asian rights while Gaga is handling the rest of the world. Toho will release the film in Japan on April 12.
