Gavin Hood, in town to attend last night's world premiere of Rendition, has lined up a December start in Australia and New Zealand for the X-Men spin-off Wolverine.

Hood said he planned to make a profound origins story that would bear the hallmarks of Greek tragedy.

'We all mutate after trauma, in a way, so I wanted to explore how his mutation is the result of a deep psychological trauma,' the South African film-maker said. 'This is an opportunity to write a story in a grand opera way.' Fox holds worldwide rights.

Meanwhile Rendition is expected to stir audiences with its torrid tale of the emotional turmoil surrounding CIA interrogation and the fight against terrorism. Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal star and New Line holds worldwide rights.
