Samuel Goldwyn Films has acquired North American rights for Milos Forman's Goya's Ghosts starring Javier Bardem, Natalie Portman and Stellan Skarsgard.

The story is told through the eyes of the celebrated Spanish painter, played by Skarsgard, and focuses on events that unfold when a powerful clergyman falls for Goya's muse.

Saul Zaentz produced the film and Samuel Goldwyn Films plans a summer release. Forman co-wrote the screenplay with Jean-Claude Carriere.

'Milos Forman and Saul Zaentz have created yet another beautiful and human story told against a fascinating period in history,' Samuel Goldwyn Jr said. 'Their long collaboration has included One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest and Amadeus and we look forward to adding Goya's Ghosts to that list of quality films.'
