Koch Lorber Films and Netflix's Red Envelope Entertainment have jointly acquired all US and Canadian rights to French coming-of-age tale Water Lilies (La Naissance des Pieuvres).

First time writer-director Celine Sciamma's film about a group of teenage girls who gather at a suburban swimming pool premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at this year's Cannes Film Festival.

After additional major festival screenings throughout North America Koch Lorber plans a national theatrical rollout beginning in New York in the first quarter of 2008, followed by a DVD release day-and-date with Netflix later in the year.

Koch Lorber's Richard Lorber - who, together with Liesl Copland of Red Envelope, negotiated the deal with Film Distribution's Nicolas Brigaud-Robert and Didar Domehri - described the film as 'a wonderfully sublime piece of fiction from a brilliant new directorial talent.'

Koch Lorber Films' current and upcoming theatrical releases include Tribeca award-winner Blessed by Fire, Berlin Golden Bear winner U-Carmen, and Claude Chabrol's latest collaboration with Isabelle Huppert, The Comedy of Power.

Red Envelope acquires and funds original content to offer to DVD distributor Netflix's nearly seven million subscribers.
